Mac,
as he liked to be called, was the son of Norval "Big Mac"
McGhie. I don't
know if Mac had siblings. His mother's name was Elizabeth Davies. She died when he was born, so Mac lived with one of his
aunts while growing up. He
left home when very young and joined the Merchant Marines.
In
his early twenties Mac went to Alaska with a family fishing operation.
His uncle Sam P. McGhie owned a fishing business in the Bering
Sea (See History of Sam P. McGhie).
Mac told of an experience while fishing on a canning ship in
the Bering Sea. Crew
members on a Japanese ship nearby opened fire on their fishing vessel.
A bullet hit Mac in the thigh, but he said he didn't even feel
the bullet hit him, it was so cold.
One of his proud memories was going through the Panama Canal on
a fishing boat.
Mac
married Bonnie Torbit in Seattle.
He worked in Seattle at Lockheed Shipping Co. until retiring in
1975. He died on August
25, 1988, the day his fourth great grandchild was due to be born.
He was 78. Mac was
cremated and his ashes are buried at Quartz Lake, Alaska at the McGhie
summer cabin.

Longview, Washington, then Seattle. Bonnie graduated from Roosevelt High School in Seattle.
One of her noteworthy classmates was Actor Howard Duff.
Bonnie
had two older brothers, Charles and Harry, and a younger sister, Jane.
Harry resided in Chicago until he died.
Charles is also deceased, and Jane lives in South Seattle.
Widowed
in August, 1988, Bonnie lived alone in her Edmonds home with two cats
until 1997 when she moved to Port Townsend, WA, with her son Bruce
